NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. - The resurgence of West Coast Elite and their dominant play looked in question during their quarterfinal game in Nike Nationals Gold Division. They came out with low energy and a slow start that has bitten them in tournaments past and cost them a chance at the championship game. But this determined squad is focused on winning and shedding the label that it can't win the big one, so it beat the Philly Belles despite the last-minute heroics of Caroline Doty.

Caroline Doty

West Coast Elite has been on a roll with big wins leading to more confidence and more confidence. The Belles looked unphased by the imposing front court of West Coast Elite which includes the top post in the country in Kelsey Bone as well as Monique Oliver, who is one of the top 2009 posts in the country, and Ashley Gayle a 6-foot-4 shot-blocking and rebounding monster also in the frontcourt rotation. The Belles stormed out to early leads between seven to 10 points and sped West Coast Elite up with their constant trapping defensively. The chaotic defense limited the looks by the post players and allowed the Belles to play their style.

This is where the West Coast Elite has had issues in the past and got frustrated and Monday it never happened. They kept their cool, slowed the game down and when the defense started sagging off to help on the interior they stepped in and knocked down perimeter shots with confidence.

The big story of the game was Briana Gilbreath, who on top of playing great defense on Doty and making great post entries, led her team down the stretch by hitting big shots. Gilbreath led the team in scoring as well and her confidence was contagious. She did a little of everything and proved why she is one of the best all around players in the country. She rebounded, blocked shots, denied passing lanes, hit shots, made plays and, other than a short mental lapse that allowed Doty to knock down a three and cut the lead late in the game, she was on the money the entire time. She missed a couple of free throws during tn the last minute of the game and got a chance to reprieve herself a few possessions later and she did by sealing the deal 53-47.

West Coast Elite is now looking down an unfamiliar barrell in their semifinal matchup with DFW who they haven't played this year. The Texas kids know all too well though that playing against Destini Hughes, Brooklyn Pope, Cokie Reed and company is not going to be easy. They can ill afford another slow start.

"It starts in warmups," Gilbreath said. "We need to break a sweat and today we didn't do that."
