Rhode Island

For the 2007 and 2008 classes, Rhode Island high-school basketball is a gusher of great guards and swing players. It is definitely not the land of tall timber or post players, though there are a couple with Division I abilities.

St. Mary Academy-Bay View, the Class A champion in 2006 and runners-up in 2007, has two of the top guards in the state. First-team, all-state selection Brittany Wilson is a wiry 5-foor-10 swing player with an outstanding pull-up jumper and an ability to get to the hoop. Her style has been compared to George Gervin. She has heard from numerous D-1 colleges. Kashaia Cannon, a second-team, all-state junior is less well-known and possibly the undiscovered gem. She is a strong lefty with a terrific all-around game. The schools that have expressed interest in her include Providence and Boston University.

Guard Trinity Hull played for Cranston East, but has been re-classified as a 2008 prospect and will attend Notre Dame Prep in Massachusetts. Hull is a very quick, 5-7 point guard with great ballhandling skills. She can get to the hoop almost at will but still hit a pull-up jumper.

The two best inside players in the state are senior Tory Ahrens of East Greenwich High School and junior Piper Chapman of the Prout School (Class B) in South Kingstown. Ahrens is 6-1, very strong and physical. She gets fouled often and hits her foul shots. Chapman is probably the most athletic post in the state. She is 6-1 and runs the floor well. She has a very good jump shot and some good post moves. Senior Courtney Williams of St. Raphael Academy is 6’0”, strong and physical, but needs to develop the skills of her older sister Candace (a 2006 prospect who was first team all-state and went to New Hampshire).

The best of the other guards are junior Meredith Ward of Westerly (Class B), senior Cynthia Gaudet of reigning state champion LaSalle and senior Nicole Girard of Ponagansett. Ward is a very strong lefty who goes to the basket like a bull to score or pass. She also has a smooth jump shot. Gaudet is an excellent point guard with a good outside shot. She is a tenacious defender and excellent team leader. Girard is a slasher scorer and a tough defender. When she finishes developing a consistent outside shot she will be an outstanding all-around player.

Senior Lauren Harrington of Exeter-West Greenwich is a ferocious defender who goes well to the hoop. She needs a better left hand and more arc on her jump shot to be outstanding but she has the athleticism to develop those skills. Krissy Fahey of Cumberland had an outstanding sophomore year, but a less consistent junior year. She is very quick, drives and passes well. Fahey has a funky jump shot that works in high school, but may need fixing at the college level. Dennerlein is a very quick lefty who drives well, but also has a funky jump shot with a slow release. Like Fahey, she has the athletic ability to change it for college competition.
