This is Briana Gilbreath's first year playing without her older sister, Stefanie, who will be off to USC for school. So for her first big tournament without big sis, she had a couple of personal critiques.

“I really think I could have done better on my shooting,” Gilbreath said of her performance in the West Coast Elite Invitational. “I wasn’t very consistent this weekend. I can do better, I know I can. I just (have to) get back in the gym (and) keep practicing.”

More and more kids that are told they need to get stronger to compete on the next level and many waste no time getting into the gym. When lifting a ton of weights you body is actually changing and as many players now in college would probably tell you it affects a few things while packing on the muscle.

“I’ve been doing a lot of lifting, so that may be part of the reason why,” said Gilbreath, the No. 26 prospect in the 2008 class, according to HoopGurlz.com. “I’ve been doing weight but I just started getting heavy.”

The intense weight training and its impact on her jumper are not the only changes for Gilbreath this year. She’s having to learn to play with out Stefanie, too.

“When she’s there I know I’m playing with someone who will get my back if I mess up,” Gilbreath said. “Playing without her, I know I have to do my job. I don’t have anyone to fall back on. Of course I have my teammates and I have to trust them. But it’s not like having your sister out there. But you know, I (have to) do my job.”

Most assume that Gilbreath will follow her sister to USC but that isn’t actually a sure thing, according to her and her family. While she misses playing with her sister, she is completely okay with going off on her own either. Most can’t help comparing the two players, although they play different positions and that constant comparison may compel her to do something different although the sibling ties are close between the sisters.

“My top school is USC, of course,” said Gilbreath, “Temple is one of my top schools, Texas, I’m looking at them and Texas A&M. There’s a few other schools that I’m looking at so I’m pretty open.”

Gilbreath knows what field of study she wants already. “I’m looking to (major in) sports psychology,” Gilbreath noted.

There are several factors weighing in on Gilbreath’s decision.

“I’m actually really high on academics, so that’s the main thing," she said. "And also coaching style and how a team plays. I like to push, but also know how to set up the halfcourt offense and defense of course. Also what I can do outside of basketball. You know, a social life. What can I get out of the degree also."

Gilbreath has visited most of the schools in the West in which she’s interestedand. At this point, she has no visits planned for this summer but she does plan on taking some. She hopes to get out East to some other schools that interest her.
