These have been somewhat unconfortable, squirm-in-your-seat times for Duke, a program whose rise to superpower status was somewhat stalled by the departure of coach Gail Goestenkors.
The stall, if you want to call it that, even is mostly psychological in nature. The Blue Devils hired a top-notch replacement in Joanne McCallie, but Duke fans have been reminded frequently in the recruiting arena, at least, that there must be a period of rejuventation. From Elena Delle Donne to Lynetta Kizer, many of the elite prospects have said their interest in Duke left with Goestenkors.

But here's some positive news: Not Shay Selby.
Selby, the top-ranked point guard in the 2008 class by HoopGurlz, committed to the Blue Devils last October. She's sticking to that commitment.
Pinch yourselves, Duke fans, because this is a case where everything aligned in your favor. Selby, from the Cleveland, Ohio, area, was heavily recruited by McCallie on behalf of Michigan State. Selby says she might have picked Michigan State but for one thing: academics. She has a 4.1 grade-point average and wants to study medicine, so Duke makes more sense for her.
At the time, Selby says, McCallie didn't flinch.
"She understood," Selby said of McCallie. "When she was playing, Duke was one of her top choices, too."
Yes, the academically inclined McCallie went to another intellectual powerhouse, Northwestern, for her college basketball, so she could empathize with Selby. That little connection turned out to be huge later on, as the Blue Devils add a super-smooth point guard with incredible (yes, incredible) passing skills who actually is compatible with 2007 signee Jasmine Thomas, a combo guard who shoots and defends a little better than her future teammate.

Kamiko Williams has taken an interesting route from Germany to highly regarded 2009 prospect in Tennessee. The 5-11 swing player averaged 22.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists for Northeast High School in Clarksville, Tenn., and is attracting much advance interest. The club teammate of Glory Johnson's has a school list of Vanderbilt, Florida, North Carolina, North Carolina State and Clemson. Johnson and Williams play for the Tennessee Team Pride. ... Word is, Texas could become a real player in the recruitment of Ashley Corral. The Vancouver, Wash., point guard's stock has been rising steadily and she already is considered by much of the Pac-10 as the best lead guard in the West. ... Emily Correal is another 2009 prospect to keep an eye on. The 6-3 forward has averaged double-doubles (14 &10, 16.6 &11) during her first two seasons at Peters Township, just outside of Pittsburgh, where she has been named area player of the year. Correal is receiving interest from Ohio State, Penn State, UCLA, Cincinnati, Xavier, Pitt and Virginia Tech, among others. ... Victoria Naylor, a 5-7 guard out of Green Valley High in the Las Vegas area, has committed to the University of Denver. Naylor also had been considering Boise State, BYU, Fresno State, Oregon State, Pepperdine and Utah.
