MRI Confirms ACL Tear
By HoopGurlz StaffPosted Thu, 09/13/2007 - 05:51 UConn-bound Caroline Doty will miss her senior season of high-school ball, but received a bit of good news, too.
An MRI examination confirmed Wednesday what Caroline Doty already knew following her injury during a high school soccer game last Friday - she’ll need surgery to repair a completely torn anterior-cruciate ligament in her left knee.
But the results did reveal some good news for the Connecticut-bound guard. In addition to learning that she suffered a clean tear to her ACL, Doty was told that the surrounding damage to her knee was not as bad as she initially feared.
"There was so much pain on the outside of my knee, and I thought that my LCL was shot too," Doty said. "But I just have a contusion and a slight meniscus tear, which will heal itself."

Ranked by HoopGurlz.com as the No. 10 prospect in the 2008 class, Doty will travel to Hartford, Conn., today to seek a second opinion. The senior guard doesn’t expect a different prognosis, but would prefer to be treated closer to where she will play her college ball at the University of Connecticut next year. Doty hopes to return to action in six to eight months.
"I talked to Geno and he’s upset for me, but still really positive," Doty said. "He just told me that I can come back even better than before and I’ll probably be cleared to play right as summer camps are starting."
Doty has shrugged off one injury after another over the last few years. Most recently, as HoopGurlz.com reported in July, Doty missed only one game during USJN National Championship in Washington, D.C., after shattering her two front teeth on the court. Prior to that, Doty had bounced back from a fractured fibula heading into her freshman year, followed by an on-the-court collision her sophomore year that led to her braces piercing her cheek and requiring stitches.
In addition to basketball, Doty excels at both soccer and track and field. She struggled somewhat with the decision to return to the soccer field during her senior season with a basketball scholarship already locked up. But Doty says she loves her soccer teammates, and has enjoyed playing since her freshman year at Germantown Academy.
"I knew about the risk of getting hurt if I played soccer again, but I didn’t want to go out there worrying about that," Doty said. "It’s unfortunate that this happened, but I love being outside playing during the fall and this could have happened on a basketball court, too."
No surgery date has been set, but Doty expects that it will take place in the next few weeks after her visit to Hartford.
