MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis is known for its blues, but, this past weekend, it was also about the Jas.
Yes, that's right. Seventh grader Ebony Hayes made her debut by giving some blues - Memphis style - to Jasmine Hassell, a highly regarded high-school junior. The two Memphis giants met up during the first first five minutes of the first game of the evening at the Blue Star South showcase here.

Ebony Hayes
Hayes, a 6-foot-3 post out of Havenview Middle School, in Memphis, dominated the boards, ran the floor, and scored at will while adding a couple of blocked shots during the game's first few possessions. That quickly awakened Hassell and, from that point until the end of the event, it was all about the Jas - Jasmine Hassell.
Hassell showed the fans, her opponents and countless college representatives why she is ranked No. 16 in the HoopGurlz.com Super Sixty for 2009. In one possession, she drop stepped, with elbows high, initiated contact, scored the basket and drew the foul. Just like that, youngster Ebony Hayes quickly realized that Miss Hassell, being four years her senior, would be too much to overcome that game. However, Hayes, the 2013 prospect, still appears to be afuture prototype center.
The Jas played on...in the tune of Jasmine McKinney, a 6-3, 2010 post out of Memphis, and Jasmine Trotter, a 6-3, 2010 post out of Marion, Tenn. From beginning to end, the two were shot-blocking phenoms. A different genre of Jas also emeraged as 5-10 Jasmine Taylor, a 2009 wing guard out of Collierville, Tenn., made the trumpets sound with a sweet mid-range game. Just when we thought we had heard enough Jas, the symphony roared and Jasmine James - JJ to most - a 5-9 2009 guard from Bartlett, Tenn., found he rythym. James is a strong defender who plays the passing lanes well while scoring inside, outside and mid-range.
Once the Jas session ended the Blue Star Showcase hadn't missed a beat.
RIM SHOTS
Sarah Watkins, 6-3, a 2009 wing-forward from Germantown, Tenn., made her presence felt, equally stong on the perimeter as in the paint. She made a great case for herself to break into the HoopGurlz Hundred. ... LaSondra Barrett, No. 12 in the HoopGurlz Hundred for the 2008 class, showed why she was heavily recruited before committing to LSU recently. ... Mary Jackson, a wing out of OakHaven, Tenn., showed tough, aggressive play at multiple positions and tremendous leaping ability with left- and right-hand finishing. ... Candis Clear, a 5-3, 2009 point guard from Memphis, Tenn., is considering Duke, Notre Dame, Middle Tennessee State and Miami. ... Others who impressed were Symone Daniels, 5-11, a 2011 guard from Memphis; Kurstin Meade, 5-9, a 2008 guard from Memphis; Jasmine Newsome, 5-7, a 2010 guard from Millington, Tenn.; Chigozi Okwumabna, 5-10, a 2011 guard from Memphis; Sarah Watson, 6-1, a 2009 wing-forward from Bartlett, Tenn., and Jessica Winfrey, 5-11, a 2009 guard out of Marion, Ark.

Great Event
This event was what memphis needed to finally show what type of talent we have down here in West Tennesse and I also think the 2008 class in Memphis is making lots of noise with commitmnets to LSU(Crystal Riley), Ole Miss(Latosha Laws), Louisville(Mary Jackson), Chattanooga(Andrea Neil), Western Kentucky(Kaitlin House), Austin Peay(Jasmine Rayner), and Alabama-Huntsville(Diana Alsbrook), and there is a whole list of seniors who are D1 Prospects that are in the decision making process. We in the girls basketball community would love to see hoopgurlz kind of a camp out for a while in memphis this season to really check out the talent in the city just to get your own opinion of our talented young ladies. That's only because your CONTACT in Memphis might be a little closed minded to the fact or just in plain denial that there are other young ladies that dont play in his or her "Program" that maybe just as or even more talented than the players he or she maybe giving you. But all in all i do appreciate the event and a thanks to blue star and you guys(hoopgurlz) for coming to our little town. A tip in closing watch who you(hoopgurlz) talk to in Memphis about girls basketball because I'll say 90 percent of the time you may get a bias view on a player, program, or high school team.
Just Keepn It Real
The Truth Coach
Next time have your kids there
Hey TRUTH Coach,
Since we're giving out tips here, here's one for you. Next time Blue Star sponsors an event in Memphis and Hoopgurlz covers it, send your kids to the event instead of sending them to another event 500 miles away because you are making money off of it. I'm going to go out on a limb and say Blue Star and Hoopgurlz don't need you or anyone else to tell them how to do their jobs. All of the people in the basketball community should appreciate the relationships that have been formed and the hard work that brought this event to Memphis and made it a success. Sounds like you're the one who has the bias. If you're really interested in helping the girls in the Memphis area, drop the personal agenda and support these types of events instead of carrying your kids out of town. You want the TRUTH, you can't handle the TRUTH!!!!
Next time have your kids there 2
GREAT response volntr98…. I was personally going to ignore the TruthCoach’s remarks but I am glad you responded.
TruthCoach:
Like volntr98 stated: You didn’t participate because you would rather isolate your players from an event that EVERYONE was invited to because you did not organize it. Players from 4 different states participated and you chose to go to Texas instead of driving 10 minutes. Now, because the event was a success, here you are on a national web site complaining and disrespecting players that participated that rightfully deserve the OVERDUE exposure. The sad thing is that some of the players once played for your organization. (Can you say sucking on sour grapes?) Nobody ever said these were the only players in a 4 state radius or in Tennessee or the only players in Memphis.
FACT: they showed up and participated in the event! They were seen and evaluated! You didn’t!
I’m sorry that your personal agenda overrides the advancement of players regardless of what organization they participate in.
TO ALL READERS: Memphis extends our apologizes to the rest of the nation who has to read this!
mild response
First of all, i am not who you guys think i am, and in no way did i BASH the event, the organization you guys are referring did make a bad decision by not having their players in memphis that weekend and again my comment was titled "Great Event". And I'll leave it at that

TheTruth ...
Your advice is appreciated, but not necessary. We go see the kids for ourselves and have our own ability to formulate opinions and evaluations. Your energy is far better spent figuring out how to get us out seeing your kids, and letting us know where the kids are playing.

SHOWDOWN IN MEMPHIS
The Exposure Event in Memphis was AWESOME!!!! It was very successful and it showcased how very little girls in certain areas ( Memphis) are getting lilttle to no credit what so ever. The talent in Memphis and its surrounding areas is absolutely incredible. Young ladies such as Jasmine Hassell, Sarah Watkins, Jasmine James, Adrianne Pratcher and Mary Jackson are great ball players. Each young lady listed and many more are awesome players and everyone better get on board or lose out on something special!
Great Showing in M-town
There was some great basketball being played in Memphis Tennessee with quite a few college coaches in attendance to witness some great talent. Chigozi (Chi-Chi) Okwumabwa actually belongs to the "talent filled" class of 2009. For those of you that have not seen Jasmine Hassell, Jasmine James, or Sarah Watkins, words cannot begin to explain the talent that these young ladies possess. When you finally have the opportunity to watch them in action, you will understand what all the commotion is about.
Thanks to hoopgurlz for being in attendance and shinning some light on the tremendous talent in Memphis.
Memphis Talent
Memphis talent is among the nations best...... 2008 class has some big time committments Crystal Riley (LSU), Mary Jackson (Lousiville), Catlin House(Western Kentucky) Andrea Neil(UT Chatt.) more to come.....2009 is becoming a highly recruited class with the likes of Jasmine JJ James, Sarah Watkins, Chi Chi O. and Jessica Winfrey to name a few......2010 has The Lauren Avant....2011 has up and coming Symone Daniels and more....2012 has Ebony Hayes, Destiny James, Danielle Ballard. The Memphis talent will ensure it to be a hotbed for Girls Basketball for years to come.
