Cinco Ranch Crashes Texas 5A Party
By Chris HansenNational Director of Scouting
Posted Thu, 02/21/2008 - 11:48 Texas powerhouses Bellaire and Cy-Fair were on a regional collision course until Briana Gilbreath and Cinco Ranch blocked the way in.

A Belliare-Cy-Fair collision has been a season-long expectation for the Texas 5A regional semifinals Saturday. It was supposed to pit two teams connected by summer ball with Belliare (Belliare, Tex.) assistant Rob Amboree coaching the Ogwumike sisters of Cy-Fair (Cypress, Tex.) in the summer with the Cy-Fair Shock program. Bragging rights were supposed to be on the line, but McDonald’s All-American Brianna Gilbreath and her Cinco Ranch (Katy, Tex.) team derailed the anticipation train and replaced it with the pain train.
Cy-Fair did its part by dispatching Elsik 61-26, a team it narrowly defeated during the regular season 40-36. Bellaire on the other hand had the disastrous mix of having beaten Cinco Ranch handily in the first game of the season, 91-47 and was caught looking forward to the anticipated game with Cy-Fair.
“The first time we played them, I was sick, I had the flu,” Gilbreath said. “I played (one) minute and didn’t play the rest of the game.”
Gilbreath, despite being the focus of the Bellaire defense, scored 15 points, 12 in the first half while teammate Kelsey Clinch also added 15 points. Cinco Ranch (29-7) was overlooked because of the graduation of Gilbreath’s older sister, Stefanie, who was also an All-American guard and now a freshman at USC.
Even with both Gilbreaths the past three seasons, Cinco Ranch never advanced past the regional quarterfinals so this marks the deepest into the tournament the team has ever gone. Friday they will meet a Marshall (Missouri City, Tex.) team that is 23-8 on the season.
“We know how they play,” Gilbreath said. “It’s going to be a competition because everyone plays different in the playoffs.”

In the other semifinal game, Cy-Fair will take on Dulles High School (Sugar Land, Tex.). This matchup will feature two of the best front court players in the country head-to-head with senior Nneka Ogwumike (Stanford commit) of Cy-Fair and junior Kelsey Bone of Dulles. Ogwumike is the No. 6 ranked player in the 2008 class according to HoopGurlz.com while Bone is the No. 1 ranked junior in the country.
In Region 1, nationally ranked Desoto High School (Desoto, Tex) is in the semifinals. Defending 5A state champion Rockwall is still alive after a nine-point victory in the Region 2 quarterfinals. Sixteen teams remain in the quest for the Texas 5A State Championship.
Rankings Buzz
The Colorado Preps Radio Network released its updated rankings on Feb. 19, and two familiar names remain atop the 5A poll. Highlands Ranch High School (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) remains the No. 1 team in the state led by Alyssa Fressle (Colorado commit) and Jade Davis (Wisconsin commit). The Falcons are 18-3 on the season with all its losses coming against nationally ranked opponents - Sacred Heart Cathedral (San Francisco, Calif), Polytechnic High School (Long Beach, Calif.) and Southridge High School (Beaverton, Ore.) – while beating Sapulpa (Sapulpa, Okla.), Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.) and local powers Regis Jesuit High School (Aurora, Colo.) and cross-town rival ThunderRidge High School. The Falcons are ranked No. 6 in the latest Full Court Press (www.fullcourt.com) rankings.
Regis Jesuit (20-2) is ranked No. 2 in the poll after losing 74-49 to Highlands Ranch Feb. 2. The Raiders only other defeat this season was to the No. 3 team in the country, Notre Dame Academy (Middleburg, Va.) which was ranked as the No. 1 team in the country earlier this season. The loss to Highlands Ranch dropped the Raiders out of the national top 25 polls but a state championship could catapult it back into the mix and that road more than likely leads back through Highlands Ranch.
Rounding out the 5A top 10 are Denver East (17-3), Dakota Ridge (18-3), Montbello (17-4), Air Academy (17-4), Chaparral (17-4), Cherry Creek (15-5), Lakewood (17-4) and Grand Junction Central (17-3).
The 4A classification has 19-1 Broomfield at the top while 16-2 Faith Christian claims the top spot in Class 3A. Simla High School (17-0) is No. 1 in Class 2A while McClave High School (16-1) takes the top honors in 1A.
Notes
Sarah Booth (Stanford commit) of Warren Township High School (Gurnee, Ill.) was named Chicago Sun-Times Player of the Year. Warren was recently eliminated from the playoffs by Wheeling High School (Wheeling, Ill.) which features Ashley Wilson, a club teammate of Boothe’s Full Package summer team. … The Victory Christian School (Charlotte, N.C.) received a tremendous going away present from senior guard Candace Wood (North Carolina commit) as she scored 28 points leading her team to another conference championship. Wood was named the SPAA Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player as well as the 2008 SPAA Conference MVP. Wood’s teammates Kiara Williams (senior) and Alexis Hicks (sophomore) were named to the SPAA All-Tournament First Team. … Courtney Hurt (Virginia Commonwealth commit) had an impressive scoring run in the Region 8-AAAA GHSA Tournament for Salem High School (Conyers, Ga.). Hurt scored 104 points in the tournament - 36, 38 and 30 consecutively – and also broke her own school record for points in a single game back in January when she scored 41 points.
