Tierra Ruffin-Pratt
Master of All

Posted Thu, 05/10/2007 - 07:53 A guard from the 2009 class may be the best all-around player in the country.
One of the most humble personalities in the country belongs to one of the most fierce on-court competitors in the 2009 class' top guard, Tierra Ruffin-Pratt. Not only is she fierce on the court, she has perhaps the most complete game of any high-school player right now.
Nobody plays on-ball defense like Ruffin-Pratt and you can see watching her play for even a couple of possessions that she really enjoys ruining the day of the opposition’s ball handler. She is very quick, strong and physical like a pro guard which is something most high school players are not equipped to handle and even though it’s hard for her to talk about herself – she knows it.
“The best part of the game is defense,” Ruffin-Pratt said. “That’s where the game is won. I think if you have more energy on defense you’ll get more open shots by getting steals and getting transition.”
George Porcha, head coach and assistant athletic director at T.C. Williams High School, said, “Because of her defensive prowess on the AAU circuit her offense gets overlooked, but that is very misleading… she led (her AAU team)in scoring last season.”

And Ruffin-Pratt's club team, Boo Williams Summer League, is one of the best in the country. During Ruffin-Pratt's tenure with the team, it has had three other high Division I guards on its roster with Kimberly Rodgers and Marah Strickland, both of whom signed with Maryland, and She’la White, who returns this year and has verbally committed to North Carolina.
Both her high school coach, Porcha, and her club team coach, Boo Williams, are not short on praise for Ruffin-Pratt. Both think she might just be the best player they’ve ever seen at the high=school level. In fact, Porcha is adamant about it.
“We have absolutely no animosity on our team because they know that Tierra does whatever is necessary for the success of the team," Porcha said. "She never worries about her own personal stats or accolades. Even the refs love her because she never argues a perceived bad call. She runs down loose balls out of bounds and hands the ball back to the ref all the time.”
Ruffin-Pratt has a competitive stare on the court that she honed playing from ages 6-12 against boys in rec leagues and pick-up games.
“It made me stronger and all that,” Ruffin-Pratt said. “The boys are stronger, make you work harder and it is a lot faster. It’s how I am able to play defense.. it made it easier when I started playing girls.”
Ruffin-Pratt always is the most aggressive player on the court and not in a reckless way. She brings it every possession. It’s what makes her elite and not just good.
“She is the ultimate competitor as she just refuses to lose," Porcha said. "She will do whatever is needed in order for her team to get the win. If that means diving on the floor for loose balls, she does that. If that means guarding the other team's best player, regardless of position, she will do that. If it means moving to the point guard so we can handle the other team's pressure to get into our offense she will do that. Even if it means going down low and getting all the critical rebounds to close out a game she will do that.”
At the Boo Williams Invitational, Ruffin-Pratt, who is 5 feet 10, took on the No. 1 prospect in the 2008 class, 6-4 Elena DelleDonne. By her coach's count she held DelleDonne to only one field goal made in the Boo Williams semifinal. DelleDonne was forced to do her damage against other defenders or from the free=throw stripe.
Ruffin-Pratt's success has her community up in arms. Suddenly girls have someone to look up to in girl’s basketball and Ruffin-Pratt is a role model with her talent and gets it done in the classroom. “She has changed the culture of girl’s basketball in our City (Alexandria),” Porcha said. “All of our youth girl’s basketball players in the city aspire to be like Tierra as she has cultivated the sport (to) all of the girls in our city.”
She has maintained a GPA over 3.0 now for nearly two years and has been a VHSL Honor Roll recipient while playing a varsity sport.
With her competitive nature, Ruffin-Pratt also looks forward to big matchups such as the one with Delle Donne. She seems to thrive on them.

“I think I take it the most serious when I play top players,” said Ruffin-Pratt, the girl everyone knows as Tee. “I know my game has to be ready. Last year I used to get up for West Coast (Elite) and the (Georgia) Metros, teams like that. You got to beat the best to be the best and it’s not really even the top player, but the top teams I get up for.”
Ruffin-Pratt appears focused and ready to go every game I’ve watched her play. She continued telling me the weaknesses and strengths of many of the top players she has faced, showing how much she studies. I actually made it a point not to watch her club team during the spring viewing period until bracket play because I wanted to see her against the best the tournament had to offer. The problem is that most players are overmatched and, luckily, I caught her against perhaps the one player that isn’t, DelleDonne.
Ruffin-Pratt averaged 23.7 points per game her sophomore season, missing six games because of a bruised shoulder. Even with the injury she’s scored 1,204 points during her career. She also averaged 11.4 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 4.0 steals and 2.7 blocks. Her career high came against Mt. Vernon High School on December 8, 2006 when she dropped 43 points on them and then two weeks later turned around and set a career high for rebounds with 23 against Mayfield. In her short career at T.C. Williams she has logged five triple-doubles.
The hotly recruited guard has a lot of big-name schools associated with her, but admits she’s not put much thought into picking a school yet. Schools cannot contact her and she wants to get to know the coaches and programs before making a decision. She’s also a fan of talking with the coaches directly, as opposed to text messaging. “I can talk to coaches, it’s better if you talk,” Ruffin-Pratt said of her personality. “I text message, but most kids text message a lot and need an unlimited package. I don’t.”
Ruffin-Pratt's communication skills on the court reveal a very confident, intelligent player and person. She has no problem looking an opponent or coach in the eyes. She's a player that every team in the country is after and her recruitment is about to catch on fire this summer.
“I have seen many great players around the country and of course I am definitely biased, but I wouldn't trade Tierra for anybody in any class," Porcha said. "I know her skill level and competitive spirit and there is no way that I would want to have to coach against her."
